Owing to its beauty and elegance, marble has become a popular choice for countertops, floors, foyers, fireplace facings, fire-hearths, walls, and windowsills. Many marbles are well suited for wet area application, which extends the versatility of this material to include baths and showers. Granite, a quartz-based stone, is often considered the queen of the stones for flooring purposes. Salt, pepper and veined patterns, very similar to marble, are very common. It is among the hardest of natural stones and is used for many applications including structural works due to its high compressive strength and durability. Typically you will find granite used for flooring, countertops, vanities, furniture and of course as exterior cladding. The main advantage of granite is that there aren't two granite stones alike, even when they come from the same quarry and belong to the same grade. Every slab is unique and cannot be duplicated. Granite requires very little maintenance because of its stain and heat resistance capacity. Its superior strength and permanence of finish in extreme environments makes it one of the most sought after building ‘finishing products’.

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock. Slates form smooth flat sheets of stone which have long been used for roofing, floor tiles, and other purposes. Slate is frequently grey in color. However, slate also occurs in a variety of colors depending upon its origin and occurrence and can be found in many shades of grey, from pale to dark, and may also be purple, green or rarely cyan. Slate is particularly suitable as a roofing material as it has an extremely low water absorption index, making the material waterproof. Slate tiles are often used for interior and exterior flooring, stairs, walkways and wall cladding. Slate resists climatic changes and has little or no maintenance cost. A slate roof or tile is a custom-made job and slate quarried for roofing is of dense, sound rock and is exceedingly tough and durable. An excellent characteristic of slate is that it is waterproof, thus slate can be used for bathroom floors, driveways, pool areas, kitchen etc. When properly maintained, slate materials can last for decades, looking great without having to be removed or replaced.

Cladding is the application of one material over another to provide a skin or layer. In construction, cladding is used to provide a degree of thermal insulation and weather resistance, and to improve the appearance of buildings. Cladding can be made of any of a wide range of materials including wood, metal, brick, vinyl, and composite materials that can include aluminium, wood, blends of cement and recycled polystyrene, wheat/rice straw fibres. Rainscreen cladding is a form of weather cladding designed to protect against the elements, but also offers thermal insulation. The cladding does not itself need to be waterproof, merely a control element: it may serve only to direct water or wind safely away in order to control run-off and prevent its infiltration into the building structure. Cladding may also be a control element for noise, either entering or escaping. Cladding can become a fire risk by design or material.
